  • A pound puppy. Or older dog. I wish I could adopt them all. No question about it.
  • I'd take whichever would suit my lifestyle better, if they were different breeds. I'm going to assume they are equally right for my family, in which case I would take both. I'm a dog person.
  • Much as I feel sorry for the pound puppy (I love them and wish I could save them all), we are in financial straits perpetually, and I probably wouldn't be in a position to pay for it. And,I would probably have to give the show dog to my sister, who is a breeder, as we have a cute kitty.
  • The pound puppy. They're so much more greatfull and they generally make better dogs then the purebred ones. And I would be saving a life. A bonus.
  • The "Show Quality Dog" may be more expensive in the long run. Don't kid yourself, all the breeding that goes into making a dog look good on the outside can really screw with the temperment and internal structures on the dog. Dogs that are the product of unassisted mating and selection are usually more healthy in body and spirit. I have a not so perfect looking Siamese cat and a not so perfect looking Abyssinian and they are very charming with all their unusual markings.
  • I have had a pure bred dog given to me and I have adopted from the pound. I prefer the pound but my Manning is an incredible dog too. I would be happy either way. But I would choose to save the pound dog if that were the only choices I had. Ideally I'd take them both. Everyone should have at least two dogs.
  • I would find the purebred in the pound!
  • Both of my dogs are adopted, fortunately the one I adopted from a shelter, which I paid for, IS a pure breed Show Quality dog, however they chopped off his nutts........
  • Gimme a mutt any day.
  • Definately the pound puppy. There are so many unwanted cats and dogs who never find homes and are euthanized that I could just not justify encouraging someone who breeds dogs for profit. (Yes, even if the dog were free for me.)
  • The dog from the pound. In my experience, pure breds tend to be more susceptible to illness (IMO. I don't think there's any scientific bases behind that). And the "Show quality" dog will most likely find another home, whereas the pound pup might not.
  • People! Use your imagination! Take the show dog, sell it, then use the money to save a bunch of dogs from the pound. Sheesh!
  • I've trained all types of dogs (lots of purebreds) for over 30 years...However, all of my personal dogs have ALWAYS been mutts or crossbred dogs. I especially like Retriever mixes, despite the sad fact that the entire retriever type breeds are more likely to get cancer at some point in their lives. The MUTT will likely always be my personal choice! Put the word out...NEUTER AND SPAY to help cut back on the available number of dogs put to death EVERY DAY....INCLUDING YOUR PUREBRED DOG, UNLESS YOU PLAN TO SHOW, EARN POINTS AND TITLES BEFORE you consider breeding! There are A LOT of purebred dogs, killed along side of the Mutts!
  • To me there is no choice. A dog which is always going to find a home or one that may die if you don't adopt it. Use your conscience
  • This is obvious to me - I would adopt the mutt! The show quality dog, especially since it's free, would be guaranteed a home somewhere if I didn't take it, whereas the poor mutt may not live. My current dog & cats are all rescues & I intend on all future pets to be rescues as well!
  • I would definitely adopt. A rescue dog has less of a chance of finding a home than a purebred being given away.
  • Paws down, the known ill pound dog. Last summer I got Lord Nelson (my dog, see my avitar) from a pound. He is about 13 or so. When we got him, he had one eye. Since then he lost his second eye. He has cancer, and some other health issues. All I know is that this dog will live out his last few years happier and more spoiled that he has ever been. He's my boy!
  • All of my dogs were free, from homes that would have been pressed to pound them. All of them were mixed breeds and all of them faithful to the very end. I do not adopt from the pound, however we do donate to our local animal protection agencies and pound to promote not only preventing the "putting down" of homeless animals, but also to spread awareness and provide a sensible program toward solving the problem through "fixing them". I should note here that although we live on 2 acres of property and in a rural area that we do not need any more cats, thank you very much however our quota of feral cat is full. We appreciate that donors think that we will be able to provide a good home for their unwanted cats, but the reality is that I am no longer financially able to support a program of care, vet visits, capture and "fixing" of those cats, feeding and dead cat burial out of pocket. The next cat you drop off, please feel free to also pad the finances by placing in my mail box (Cash preferred) an sizable donation that would cover the costs of vets, food, and replacement of cat sprayed items, tools and vehicles which have become popular marking spots of donated cats.
  • Show quality dogs are often bred into what are known as "Puppy Mills". By purchasing such a dog, you are saving it from often unhealthy and unbearable conditions - or from people who would breed that dog in the same manner. Sure you are patronizing the person who breeds these dogs, but sometimes you just don't know until you have already invested time and money. Better with you then someone else. I think most people have adopted a shelter or rescue animal at some time. My cat is a rescue animal and my dog was from a puppy mill.
  • No doubt i would go with a POUND dog or a puppymill rescuer!!!! Top Quality might have it all but there is one thing pound dogs want and their days are counted too :(
  • pond you would be saving a dogs life when i was like 9 we were gona buy a 400 cat and i said can we just get one from the humane society.. save a life let somone else get the show dog...
  • We've only gone with the strays, the pound cats (and now dog), the infirmed. We are suckers for the (no pun intended) under dog.
  • I would want both...geesh, I can't stand an animal being homeless...and certainly not put down because they have no home. Guess that's why I have so many animals.
  • Depends, if I can save the life of the pound dog and he's a dog I really like I'll do it, but if I really prefer the other dog and feel he's the right to make me happy, no question. One of the keys to satisfactory ownership is that you really like (and later love) your new companion, choosing a dog that you don't like at least 75% is the first step to disaster.
  • i would tack the pound dog BUT say that that dog is a bordercolie mix and the show dog is a mini poodle if u lived in a cramped apartment the poodle would b alot happier than the collie mix. border collies are super high energi dogs the are NOT good 4 apartment life. so poodle OR border collie?
  • Pound Dog, Katrina Dog. I adopted a Boston from the Humane Society. I wish I could adopt them all, I feel bad for what humans, and Mother Nature is doing to these poor creatures, Cats, Kittties, Dogs, Puppies, Horses, Slaughter. Birds, Rodents, and even HUMANS.
  • Which ever dog like me and I like that would be the one that I would take. I went to the SPCA twice to get my 2 cats and I know the $40 is but to good use, so I didn't mind. Getting a pet to love was the important thing for me!
  • Well when I bought Sandy, I went to shelters and I couldn't find a dog there that would be okay in a house of cats. So, I went on the __4sale sites, like Ocala4sale and Tampa4sale, I found Sandy's picture and called about her, and it turned out that she was a rescue dog that had been in some horrible houses at the young age of 7 months, so I went and bought her. As cute and lovable as she is, she has serious psychological issues, and I still don't know quite how to deal with it, but I'll never have another dog again, and if I do change my mind, it won't come from a bad situation or a pound. I feel good about it in the respect that she now has a great home, but I'm being punished for what those other people did.
  • its great to get a dog or puppy from a pound but some people have a love for a certin breed like me i love st bernards i have two male female. my female is a show dog i love going to shows,an so does she.its an activity that we have done togather for 2 years now.i belive strongly that unless your dog has a strong blood line of a breed then it needs to be fixed so that we stop the population of unwanted dogs.
  • It would depend on which would get along better with my pit bulls. A show-quality poodle, for instance, would probably not do very well with them... and a shepherd mix from the pound would be great! However... if it were a show-quality Rottie... I don't know if I could pass that up...
  • I would always take the rescue dog. As far as I can tell, dogs can't tell if they're show quality or if they have papers, and they don't really care. Three of my four dogs are purebred, and one actually would've been show quality if not for the big scar on his leg, and he's obviously been trained. I'm more interested in having a dog for companionship and to love.
  • I would take the rescued dog any day. I have quite a few friends with good pedigree dogs and most of them seem to have something wrong with them - bad hips on a labrador, eye problems on a boxer and they have all been told that it is typical of they way pedigree dogs are bred. They pay huge amounts in vets bills too. My experience of rescue dogs and mongrels are that they are loving and make perfect pets.
  • easy! I'll take the mutt from the pound!
  • Pound dog - one marvels at the amount of money some are willing to spend on dogs for shows. I could see spending that kind of money for a faithful companion, yes, but cannot fathom the situation as it is, However thats,
  • I would take the Show Quality dog.
  • Adopt a dog their are so many who die save one
  • It would depend on the dog and the breed and on the current health of the dog. Most of the show dogs I know have all their health clearances and you usually know what you are getting in temperament and use. You don't know what you get from the pound. And most dogs get adopted around here. I've seen more health problems, especially mange and heart problems from pound puppies and of course a lot of temperament problems that take a great deal of time to work through. I'd have to take it on an individual case.
  • The breed isn't important to me, my preference (no matter what the options) would generally be the free one...as long as it was healthy.
  • Plain and simple, unless you are planning on showing or breeding a dog (and are very familiar with that breed standards traits and so on) There is NO NEED for a "show quality" dog. I have 3 Show quality Dobermans, only because we show them. We have also rescued Dobermans from the pound and they have turned out to be just a good if not better than the show quality dogs! I would definately go for the pound dog, because they have a lot to give and don't deserve to die!
  • I have adopted a few animals that were going to be put to sleep. I would choose that
