Sponge does not in fact really spread the dirt around the paddle, a paper towel does more damage than a sponge. The best sponge to use is in fact not some sponge offered by Butterfly, Juic or Nittaku or any other brand name company. Best sponge for cleaning rubber is O-Cel-O™ Sponge (by 3M) from grocery store, (2 sides sponge).
You must first clean the sponge in hot water thoroughly prior to use, as the sponge comes with a preservative in the package.
Yes this product woks better than the ones intended for Table Tennis, so save your money and spend it on new rubbers :)
Take your wet sponge, and wipe up wards in vertical strokes, this removes the dirt, instead of swirling the sponge around and spreading the dirt.
After you've cleaned your Table Tennis Paddle, wave it dry.

I prefer a bit of water and a new non tearing paper-towel, as opposed to those cleaners that wear out the rubber with so many chemicals or the ones that come with the sponges actually spread the dirt around the paddle.
