It's a unique ring, a universe and a anything else that starts with a "yu" sound

You found one of the exceptions to the rule. I always learned "an" precedes a word starting with a vowel and you seem to have learned that as well.

The "an" and "a" rule is not by spelling, it's by pronunciation. It's the same reason (Americans) don't say "a honor". It's what SOUNDS right. If you wanted to use "an" with "unique" you'd have to pronounce "unique" as "oonique".

this is just one of the many reasons why if it isnt ur first language, english is one of the hardest languages to learn.

An university An Unicorn LOL, its a very strange rule. If it has the, Uhh sound, use "an" If it has the, You sound use "A"

Just remember the rule " 'I' before 'E' unless 'U' 'Sea' a "Unicorn' or a 'University'" or something like that?
