    Yeah, its called "Science".

OK, what i ment by my answer was that anything that used to be thought of as magic has now been proved to have a cause or has been proved to be completly false in the first place. There is an explanation for everything (although we dont know what they all are and may never...) and as soon as we find an explanation we classify it as a form of science. So if there is some force we cant explain right now, I suppose you could call it "Magic". Keep in mind though, someday (if we persue it) there will be a "Scientific" explaination.

Magic, as in magic tricks, is a slight of hand.

Magick, an art that uses elemental energy, is considered very real by a large population of people.

This is not a matter of "what you believe"... there either is, or there is not. It makes no difference whether you believe it. The answer does depend on what you mean by the word "magic."

If you are thinking of potions capable of altering a person's feelings or physical health, of course it exists... we call it medicine - see a pharmacist. There are, of course limits: no practitioner can brew a potion that turns you into a newt or makes you invisible...

If you mean "are there certain words which have power when spoken as a spell or chant?" then the answer would be: no. For spoken words to have any real power, there must be a force or intelligence that hears and acts on those words. You might be able to program your computer to respond to your voice and turn things on or off, etc. (like the "any sufficiently advanced technology" comment).

If you are really wondering if there are supernatural forces that sometimes alter time, space, matter and energy in ways we can not explain naturally, I (and most humans in history and the present) believe that there are, and science has no tools to test this belief. Can you control them with the right words, emotions, incantations, etc? I suggest you count on it working the other way - open yourself up to these forces and they will end up controlling you. Think about it... if they already have the power and intelligence to control time, space, matter and energy, why would they subject themselves to the whims of a weak, foolish mortal like you or me?

(3-10-05: I added the "or me" at the end in case anybody thought I was being "offensive" - that was certainly not my intent.)

Science is such a vague answer? Thats to simple a solution for such a complex question? Asking if there is such thing as "real" magic? Is like asking if there is truly a "real" god. Your question lacks context in what you are refering to as real magic. If your talking about what you see in the J.K. Rowling inspired movies? Your answer is no...not in this world...but only in the imagination.

However, there is such a thing as metaphysical science, the science of the unknown such as ghosts, esp, ufo's, etc, etc. Real magic does exist in this, our world, but it really honestly depends on your faith to a particular beleif, such as christianity, kabbalism, buddism, aryavedic meditation and philosophy. There is an audio series which speaks of the most ancient texts handed down by mans ancestors by Deepak Chopra called the hymns of the Rig Veda

The Vedic tribes of India, handed down mystical mediatations and archetypical mythology for thousands of years before the written word was ever scribed by the ancient Sumarians of pre Babylonia. The old vedic yogi's would hand down their wisdom to there young vedic students by chant, and so it was for 100's of years. Legend has it that a young boy by the name of Jesus studied healing arts in this region for quiet sometime. If this is true that would explain where he was, as the bible depicts that there is aproximatly 12 years missing in the story of his life. Jesus may actually have been a Vedic Yogi,...which would describe some of the mystical magic he was capable of...such as walking on water, healing the blind and the sick, and even waking the dead. Real magic? Jesus said it himself, "All these things you see me do, you can do also, if you have faith."

Quiet simply...magic is in itself...what you have faith in.

The cool'est magic trick I ever saw fascinated me for years untill it was revealed to me. It is so good, I have been bribed with as much as 50 dollars to show how it's done. Will fascinate to no end. The trick gets even better when you involve some one in the audience. When the trick is perfected, it really seems like magic!

Magic is often a trick of perception.
What you perceive becomes your reality.
Perhaps magic is then, in some sense, real!

How do you define "magic"? Wonders you don't understand? Do you know how your cellphone works? Because that would be magic to anybody before about 1990. George Washington would probably see the car as magic. Queen Victoria would see the Jumbo Jet as magic. You live in a world of magic - or of tricks. Which word do you assign to all the gizmos you don't understand, and how do you justify that?

If you are speaking about the magic that you see on TV or in the street, it is usually sleight of hand and deception. SOme of it is amazing though isn't it?

Since faith has been a part of my life, almost everything seems to be a little magic. I find it amazing how much God helps me out just for asking. And He teaches me pretty amazing lessons too. Feels like magic.

Yes, there is such thing as magic. But you have to understand its nature to learn it. Here is one thing that is magic called the eye peirce.
Practice staring at your self in the mirror for a time untill you can see images from the sprit. The eyes are passage ways to the spirit. If you dont believe in this magic and your body is refusing it you cannot learn it. You can learn many things from just one glance to the eyes of a person.

Tough question. I would say yes, BUT be aware that this is mixed up strongly in the supernatural and the occult. I have read enough to be very convinced that playing around with "real magic" of any sort is a extremely unwise thing to do.

Well, if you're aiming towards magic as we see in RPGs and movies about the supernatural, i would not believe so fast that real magic exists. As Thom64 says, some type of force must hear you pronounce the "spell" you're trying to cast. I.e you are trying to make a simple smokescreen, you could simply chant the words (they are just babble, don't be concerned) "Ipo Soleno Samatka". I have never heard of things as magic in reality, because all i have seen is most likely tricks, decieveing our eyes.

    Nope.

There are forces that can be manipulated, but I am not sure whether this would be magic or fringe science. I have the ability to tell you how many and what gender of children you will have, simply by using a needle and thread. It works every time, and even works on people who have already had their children, telling me what children they have already had, with the same exact results every time. Is this magic? It may be connected to as of yet unknown aspects of quantum physics. Experiments have proven that we all see into the future a little bit, and this probably has to do with how our brains are wired. Time does not exist in the way that we percieve it, and it works very differently on the quantum level. This leaves wide open the possibility that our minds can access parts of time on the quantum level, enabling us to see into the future. So...is there real magic? I believe that there are rational explanations for everything, and things that we would call magic now will be identified as powerful natural forces that will cease to be magic once we understand the processes involved. So in conclusion, I believe that there is magic in the world, but only in that there are certain things we have yet to understand.

Yes Magic is real, very real. There are many types and they work to different degrees. Few understand it fully but it is real whether or not you choose to believe determines how much effect you have with it. Magic is pushing your will upon the world arround you... it is, in essence, telepathy. The problem is people do it unknowingly everyday by projecting what they want and it causes stress to the universe. Every time you want something you project it the universe chooses when it comes to you though. Shut up you stupid pessimists and cynics, anything is possible just believe everything comes with time.

Yes.There is such a thing as real magic. There are three, to me, main types of magics:
    Black magic,
    White Magic and
    Yellow magics.
All of these are extremely dangerous and powerful. These could most probably leave any human without the knowledge of what he is doing, incapable of anything else again.
These skills are learnable, but it is with, i think the quote goes, with great power comes great responsibility.
I myself have learned a few of these skills, very minor things.
Search for yellow magic. that is your best bet, black magic tends to have the worst effects, sometimes killing the persons soul with evil or fright.

Remember, only the strongest willed characters can possess this knowledge and use it to even some capability.
