Do you believe that companies have an obligation to maximize profits or an obligation to the society even if their profits suffer?

    A company has an obligation to both its stockholders AND society as a whole.

    Business is a particular mindset: it's about making money, of course. And that's a meaningful and respectable activity -- it's OK for a human being to devote a large amount of their effort to business and to try to compete and succeed and make a good profit.

    But it is not ethically viable to "disconnect" that financial motivation from the rest of life: everyone is still obliged to have their activities fit with the whole -- a business which tries to make money regardless of the cost to others (i.e. unethical activities, environmental damages, etc) is culpable and society has every right to hold them accountable for their misdeeds.
