  • Dawn Redwood----native to China, a "living fossil", thought to be extinct with the dinosaurs until it was discovered in a remote village in the early part of the last century. Monkey Puzzle----native to the mountains in Chile, odd-shaped tree with spikey leaves, so-named because it was believed a monkey could climb up the tree, but would have a hard time trying to get down because of the prickly foliage. American White Ash----native to the United States, the wood of this tree is used to make baseball bats. Black Walnut----native to Eastern North America, this tree is unusual in that it exudes a poisonous chemical from its roots, so that other plants can't grow near it and compete with it for food and water. Other trees planted near the Black Walnut often display stunted growth because of this chemical.
