A lane violation occurs when a player enters the lane before the ball leaves the free throw shooters hand or before the ball touches the rim or backboard?

    In the NBA, a player has to wait until the free-throw shooter lets go off the ball. But, the shooter himself has to wait until it hits the rim (not the backboard).
    If the ball doesn't touch the rim, it's a violation and the opponents get the ball.

    Although, there are different rules in highschool basketball (everybody waits until the ball hits the rim)
