I've been driving for over 35 years, and still have a challenge with it! Fortunately in L.A., it's not as necessary since so many lots have pull-in parking lots - however, whenever I have to do it, it gets "hairy" especially when it is a smallish space. I have a compact car, so spaces are often big enough, but still, I can't always gauge how far away I am from the curb, and I don't like to test it by banging my back right tire into the curb as I see some people do when parking. I also can't tell when I'm near the car behind, and usually err on the side of caution, so that I might be too close to the car in front if there is one. Often, I just get out of the car and see how I did, and then adjust from there. On my driving test in NYC in 1973, I almost messed up the parallel parking portion because they had me brake with my right foot and for some reason I had learned to drive with both feet - my dad, who taught me, somehow never noticed that basic fact. I wasn't used to it, and got very close to the car in front of the space I was to back into - too close for comfort! Luckily, I pulled it off, and that is maybe because I was very close to that car - i.e., I wound up closer to the curb than I might have otherwise, when I did wind my way back into the space. That was good because I had to be within 18" or I would have failed! So it was a blessing in disguise. I would say - just get out and have a look-see when you have pulled in, and you can adjust from there. It seems like a never-ending challenge, agreed!

  • Yeah, I can parallel, and reverse park extremely well. It's all about positioning your vehicle correctly to enter the park. :)

Once upon a time I could but it's been a long time and many vehicles ago. I can still do it, but not in one go.

Not with my current car, for a little sedan its turning radius stinks. Even my gearhead hubby has trouble parallel parking it, sigh, I am the queen of the 3-point turn.
