I had one two wheeler electric scooter some 30 years back. It used 4 regular car batteries to drive an electric motor. Its given name was 'fantabulos'. Made in India. It could do a maximum speed of 20 miles an hour and run for 30 miles after an overnight recharge. It was somewhat awkward except for use within our neighborhood. The electric scooters and cars that come now with Lithium batteries are much better, I hear. Does upto 40 mph and run for over a 100 miles per recharge. My old 'fantabulos' was a far cry from the modern ones. I never bothered to replace the batteries after the first 2 years of use. I sold it for scrap. My old scooter maker wound up his business and started making water heaters instead - the last I heard!

I would go with a 4 wheel if I had a choice. The three wheel configuration can have a tendency to tip if corners are turned too sharply.
