I thought everyone had heard of it by now.
Of course, there will be no end of the world. But, if we're lucky, we will get some pretty awesome mass suicides.

  • Yes, I've read about that. It comes from the Mayan calendar, which runs out in December of 2012. Some also maintain that the I Ching, the ancient Chinese method of divination, no longer works for any years after 2012. I don't know what to make of all this. Perhaps there will be some momentus event, or perhaps it will be a day like any other day. SInce it's only 4 years away, I imagine most of us will still be here to see for sure. : )

Like all doomsday prophecies - stuff and nonsense!

Besides as I understand it the Mayan calendar was cyclical not linear so it would surely be just the start of the next cycle? Like Dec 31st 2000 clicking over to Jan 1st 2001?

And on that note - we as a culture are obsessed with Apocalypticism! Probably because the Revelation having a huge influence over the development of our culture. We are always thinking we are doomed be it:

    The Rapture
    Asteroid collision
    Mega-Tsunami
    Supervolcano
Millennium Bug (comparable to 2012 I think)
    The Great Disappointment

etc and all have (so far, some are inevitable) come to nothing.

SO I see this as just the next date on the list. It will come and go.

Won't I look the foolish one when the universe wraps up? ;)

No, because it is only believed by individuals who base their assumptions on internet-based urban legends, Hollywood hype, and snippets of truth mixed with a lot of hokum. The Mayans created a calendar that projected celestial events (i.e. lunar and solar eclipses, comet passing, etc) far in to their future. Their calendar goes all the way to the northern hemisphere’s winter solstice of 2012 (23 December). Their calendar doesn’t make prophecies about what happens after that date – that’s just the date at which they concluded their calculations.

Don’t allow Hollywood and the Internet to do your reasoning – think for yourself.

No one knows when it will actually be. But according to Bible prophecy and the events in the world going on around us, we can safely say that it could possibly very well be within the next 7-10 years, without a doubt.

Here's a good website that tells you about the prophecies compared to what is going on today. Read Book 1-it will blow you away at how close we really are!

December 21, 2012 is supposed to have some sort of significance on our planet. What's supposed to happen is not exactly clear. I don't generally believe in prophecies that give an exact date, but, if Terence Mckenna thinks that something will happen on this date then so do I. That's my take on it all anyways.

I've heard that, I also heard that the return of the king is about 2013..

I laugh at all this, not that I don't believe in the return of the King (Jesus) but there's so many tings taht have to happen first.

But I'm going to see the movie, I'll have pop and hot buttered popcorn and this IS unusual as I dislike sitting in the theatre and the prices for the food are freaking nuts.

But the special effects (I have seen the trailers) will be AWESOME and that's why I'll be going..Man I can't wait!!

It's the latest in a LONG line of predicted "end of the world" days.

According to Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts (1979), an Assyrian clay tablet dating to approximately 2800 BC was unearthed bearing the words "Our earth is degenerate in these latter days. There are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end. Bribery and corruption are common." This is one of the earliest examples of the perception of moral decay in society being interpreted as a sign of the imminent end.

Personally, I think its funny that so many people on here think its funny.

Why couldn't it be? These people say its silly that the sun is dying, but how do yo know it isn't? Stars explode every day, our sun is just a star like all of them. Even if it isn't on it's last legs, it goes through cycles. We're on the cusp of a cycle that has gone on since the beginning of our sun. Sometime soon, whether in our lifetimes or another it will begin it's period of solar storms, ones that emit excessive radiation, radiation that our technology cannot handle. When that happens, it is highly probable that most of life will die or come to war, as most of the world (at least first world countries) will lose all power and water pressure (no running water).

There are other theories as well, that the earth's rotation is also on a cycle that will change along with the sun. When this happens, it is inevitable that climate change will be a huge problem. When climates change rapidly, water level becomes an issue. Many countries would then be underwater. We all know that if a country drowns, war will break free.

I'm not saying that this is what I believe will happen in 2012. However, I do think there is substantial evidence to support the theory.

Decide what you want to, look into it.

I don't think the world will explode in 2012, I think it will be a big change though. Something will change, and hopefully it will be our mindset as a race of human beings.

Either way, these people say that nothing will happen and it makes them laugh endlessly because they fear change and the possibility of death. Whatever happens, I don't care. I love our planet, and if it has to go I'm happy to go with it.

No one's heard about it...please tell me more?

Honestly, this is silly shit...people have been predicting the end of the world and pronouncing that these are end times nearly since the beginning of recorded history.

If you are a follower of the Bible doesn't it say something like no man knows the hour of my coming?

I think it's best to live every day as if it were your last. If it is Doomsday let it be...I am content but I think no matter what comes...I will miss this world should it dissolve.

If you're talking about the year the Mayan Calendar ends, I always figured they'd have to end it somewhere or either keep writing for eternity. However, I think there is a good chance we are living in the last days and even if we're not, the world ends for somebody everyday.

Mayans were the actually the originators of the 12/21/2012 mythology. They actually believed that the world had also been destroyed four times in the past, each time the earth was rebuilt, and civilization thrived again, now we are up to the fifth world, the Mayan’s believed this one will end on 12/21/2012 Doomsday. This is really no more plausible than the earth ending on (1/1/100, 1/1/1000, 1/1/2000) or any other specially predicted time. Many people really thought that the world would come to an end, but we’re still here, and 12/21/2012 will be no different than any other day. The Mayan’s that predicted this have been dead for a long time now, too bad they couldn’t predict their own certain future. Why should they be able to predict ours?

Honestly I think that all of these theories might have just been created to scare the human race. Back in 2004, there were scientists telling us that asteroids were going to strike Earth and kill everyone in 2004. Well, its now 2009, so what now? If I were to make a rumor that I found proof that the sun was going to implode upon itself on July 12, 2009, and it was posted all over the internet, then Im sure I could get everyone to believe it and freak out about it. What I think is funny is that the date of this "apocolypse" is in a pattern of one two two one one two [12/21/12]. When the scientists give us more proof of this other than a Mayan calendar that was made thousands of years ago, then maybe I'll believe it, if it's announced over the news rather than by people over the internet. So everyone should calm down and don't worry. Maybe this event will happen, but we don't know for sure. We don't have enough proof, yet. But, if this is a rumor to just make humans go crazy, then karma will come back to the people or person who made it up.

    Confessions of My Dangerous Mind

We can blame it all on the Mayans. They created the Long Count Calendar, a time measurement system that had spiritual significance to their culture. They organized their calendar into several cycles, the last of which will end in December 2012. Whether that cycle ending or it just being a new beginning is up to the person interpreting the information. I'm not worried about it and I don't think that anyone else should be either. If the world is going to end then, well at least we had warning. If it ends tomorrow well there's nothing we can do to change that either. Maybe they had some sort of insight to the future. Others may argue saying that they should have seen their empire crumbling, however maybe they did and just didn't say anything so that no one could stop it and try and change history... Who knows... Either way not scared over here.

Anyone interested in finding out what's going on with 2012

    check out:

    http://www.experiencefestival.com/forum/mayan-calendar-2012/

this shows that numbers affect people not nature

this shows that 2012 obsessions and 9/11 obsessions are connected

this shows that the calender changing in 2012 is the western one, but only in its indirect affects

all natural / cosmic / galactic / univeral disasters are rejected by the theory

this shows that fears about the end of time/world are actually fears about the end of the year.

  • eh... not really... but the mayans were very good at predicting astronomical events, and 2012 marks the peak of a solar cycle we are in right now, so scientifically speaking, we could experience one hell of a solar flare. also, the chinese i ching predicts the same date, so maybe something will happen. not like the end of the world hasn't been predicted before... and come and gone...

Well one has to take into consideration that the Mayans were very accurate in there astronomical calculations. Study has shown that the Mayan calendar is more accurate than the one we use today. The Mayans were a culture who thrived on celestial occurrences: the eclipse and the stars. Each having a story behind them. In every reputable religion, there is a end of days, from the second coming to the Ragnarok. Interesting fact is that in September 2012 the solar system will be completely aligned. Whether it is a Doomsday or just another phenomenon that will pass us by, the fact remains that the Mayans predicted the astronomical event way before anybody else.
