What is the basic electronic building block of an integrated circuit?

    Depends on the level to which you wish to plunge.

    My first thought when reading your question was "a switch." That's a collection of gates that can be set to a "zero" or "one" state.

    But going deeper you could say that a switch is made up of a set of "gates" that can be "true" or "not true".

    But going even deeper than that (looking at electron flow) the basic building block is the transistor and it's more modern relatives which are used to build the "gates."
