I am a card-carrying butt sniffer, so I will give you my take:
A smooth peri-anal area is somewhat easier to keep squeaky clean and some people prefer to bury their face in a nice smooth one. However, an unshaved BC usually retains some of that nice musky butt aroma that some rim job connoisseurs (myself included) crave.
