Help answer this question below.

What's a good book to purchase to learn the basics of sailing before i start doing it next year? Or tips in general are fine!

    Is the text the American Sailing Association uses for Basic Keelboat & Basic Coastal Cruising. It was very useful when I tested for these standards.

    Visit your local library...They have dozens of books on sailing...so you are not outlaying lots of cash when learning...
    And my little yacht is for sale...

    Honestly I don't know the name of any books but I'd try finding a tutorial on Youtube or a similar site. I learned from bookreading and when I tried for the first time I found I could do it easily, although a bit sloppily.

    There are so many good / great references to introduce you to sailing that I wouldn't want to single one out in particular and in that way make "the perfect the enemy of the good" by having you ignore all others in a search for one particular book. In general I would recommend books with lots of both general and detailed photos of a lot of different sailboats (smaller dinghies, in particular) with explanatory text of what the people in the photos are doing. The people in the photos should be obviously having a good time -- and wearing life jackets -- to give you a good example of what you will be doing -- and wearing.

    Any good library or bookstore will have a perfectly fine "introduction to sailing" book that fits this bill. The great thing about them is that a book that is 50 years old should still be perfectly fine for you at this point.
