I'm going to a formal event. I have a black tux but no shoes. Can I wear my black dress shoes, or black boots (I'm in Texas), or do I need to get black tuxedo shoes?

Eh. It would depend on your black dress shoes, I guess. Or your black boots. Put them on with the tux and ask whether they detract from the look or not, i suppose.

It is standard to wear very shiny dress shoes. Boots maybe more comfortable, but may make you stand out - and not in a good way.
