Why do many cat foods contain grains and veggies? Are they used as a filler to hold costs down or did they forget they are carnivores?

OK. Tough question and many, many opinions on the 'correct' answer.

In nature, cats are primarily carnivores and do not eat grains, veggies, or fruits.

However, the overlooked fact is that the house cat's life rarely mimics the diet of the true design of the feline.

A truly wild feline eats a full animal, including hair, guts, and bones. They also regularly eat grass to aid in digestion.

A whole mouse is the perfect feline meal, providing fiber, vitamins, and meat.

The house cat's diet is very much removed from it's natural diet and does require supplementation, at least to an extent.

I feed my cats only Blue Buffalo cat food. The main ingredient is MEAT, which the carnivore needs. It also includes whole grains, fruits, and veggies, which provide antioxidants and aid in digestion. The food is a totally holistic formula.

In addition, I grow indoor cat grass for my cats. It is a non-puke formula that the 'green' cat craves.

When my cats eat Blue Buffalo and my cat grass, they eat less, since the food satisfies and fills them better and the grass satisfies a 'fiber' need that they also require.

They not only eat less, but they puke less. There are fewer hairball issues, they seem healthier, their coats are better, and they have more energy.

The food is more costly, but since they eat less, it pretty much equals out in the end.

The domestic cat is much different than the lion or cheetah or any other original feline design. They have different dietary requirements and those should not be ignored.

That said, the 'average' cat food on the market is garbage. It is nothing but fillers and does your cat no real good, though many live their whole lives on it.

Still, the inclusion or importance of fruits, veggies, and grains, in the correct balance, should not be dismissed out of hand.

even though they are carnivores, they still need nutrition. that is why rice etc are in pet foods also.
even pets need to haev a balanced diet.
