  • I think it's a roman expression. All towns ending it Ham were places with houses on them. Like Rainham, Chatham, Wrotham. All towns ending with Chester were where places of worship like large churches. Like Chichester, Winchester and Manchester. Th name Bury was a graveyard. Like Edbury, canterbury, shaftsbury. The ending Ness is usually given to towns or places that were near or next to a river or estuary.
  • In Scotland, the town Inverness, lyterally means "mouth of the river Ness". due to it's location. If you mean ont he end of a word rather than a place name, ie, openNESS,forgetfulNESS then I haven't got the foggiest idea.
