Question

Help answer this question below.

The steering wheel on my 1999 Saturn has started to vibrate while I'm driving. It was recently towed two days in a row. Do I possiblly need a front end alignment or something more sinister. I need some hints before I take it in somewhere.

the actual alignment will not cause a vibration, but loose suspension parts will. You can check this on your own, raise the front of the car and put jack stands under the lower control arms and set the car down on them. move the wheel back and forth and have somone look at the tie rod ends and see if they have play in them. Shake the wheel up and down to check the ball joints. If you have play all around and the tie rods and ball joints are ok more than likely you have bad wheel bearings. You will hear bad wheel bearings while driving they will make a growling noise

It could be alignment, but first of all you have to get a mechanic to check it out. If you are not satisfied with his diagnosis get another opinion. It sounds a little too extensive to be just the alignment.

tires separated or out of balance, loose bent or broken steering/suspension components. it is important to know it you feel the vibration in your bum or the steering wheel. bum = rear suspension, wheel = front.

You don't say how it is vibrating (e.g. what speed range, does it intensify at higher speeds, etc.), so to add to what everyone else has mentioned, you could have a bent wheel. You could also have a damaged tire, rather than just an out-of-balance one; one of the belts in the front tires may have shifted from impact (pothole, train tracks). Also, one of your front brake calipers could be partially seized.
