by kittykat on February 4th, 2009
Makes sense to me, what other Aussie slang is there, over here we only get to hear Neigbours & I doubt people really call each other dobbers, dingo's, & galahs!

Definately not!! I have an american friend wh's only been here six months. He just doesn't understand some of the stuff we say. Gets so lost in conversation sometimes. Cracks me up.

Heh, Americans are ace! Masters of mispronunciation, we get quite a few US tourists here & they mangle local place names beautifully!
by TheJoker on February 4th, 2009
You should hear him try to say "yankalilla"!!
by kittykat on February 4th, 2009
Sweet, the best local ones here are "Cogenhoe" pronounced 'Cookno' and "Olney" the L is silent. Locals get sooo pissed off when they get em wrong. Yankalilla's a cracker!!

Kangaroo comes from the English mispronunciation of a word from the Guugu Yimithirr aboriginal language. This is an Aboriginal language whose speakers mainly live in the Hopevale region of Queensland according to Wikipedia.
.
The native word was "gangurru." The word was first recorded by James Cook (before he became a captain), but he didn't realize that it actually referred to only one of the 63 species of kangaroo that we now know exist.

George Bush, much as we may dislike some of his bad policies, is not a devil or shaytan. He can be credited with at least one good that I know of - PEPFAR. This has helped some HIV carriers in developing countries. I am not really his fan - please don't misunderestimate that.
