My brother in law had this problem but on an old Toyota 4Runner. In the case of that vehicle there is a diaghram that drives a mechanical arm at the case. The issue was that one of the two vaccum hoses was leaking and the diaphram wasn't receiving the vacuum it needed to make the change. We reversed the vacuum tubes and the 4 wheel drive unit disengaged. I don't know how your vehicle functions but you need to take a good look at it. There is a failure between that button and the transmission.
