Why do so many drink, knowing darn well it can rot their liver quicker than anything, and drinking and driving are the number #1 cause of death in motor vehicle accidents.Dont they realize they can die, lose their jobs, homes and families?

Yes, we will all die sooner or later.. my whole family smoked. My mom had 2 everyday and died of bone cancer caused by breast cancer. My dad died of heart failure when he was in his 80's and my grandparents died in their 90's both sides... so I guess whether or not you get lung cancer, emphisema, or other resperatory diseases are just in the cards.

When all people have quit smoking they will start drilling on people that eat junk food. Will we have to ban everything in the world to please everyone? ... can't please everyone all the time.

I'll probably get hit by a bus before that.

The same reason many people still drive, when the statistics show driving can lead to an abrupt death.

When first starting out we are in denial that addiction can control us to that extreme, everybody likes to think they are in control. Generally it takes several years, it varies, but rarely does someone develop lung cancer from their first cigarette, so taking that into account we don't take it as seriously as we should.

People think it won't happen to them. For each person that gets lung disease, there are some that don't. I think that people take a chance that they will fall into the OK category.

all they need to do is plant a tiny little seed of doubt to help with denial, as for the others, it is mere addiction...they have put my Dad in the hospital twice already and he still smokes

It's addicting. I'm a non-smoker, but my parents are so addicted that they can't quit.

I don't know about these statistics. Almost my whole family smokes and none of them have died from anything even remotely related to cigarettes. My own great grandmother, almost 100, has been smoking since she was 30 and she's as healthy as a horse. From my point of view, the only detriment to smoking is the money you spend on it.

One reason is the addiction but there is another that is somewhat related, or rather, a little more detail on why I found it addictive.

Nicotine does have certain positive benefits, including cognitive enhancement, tweaking Dopamine levels, and some anti-psychotic properties. Currently, there is research underway on nicotine's therapeutic properties with various disorders, like ADHD... but I ramble.

Since I quit smoking, I do that a lot. It's been long enough that you'd think that the withdrawal symptoms would be gone; a couple of months. My lungs are clear but my head is not. I am addled, short-tempered, unfocused, and borderline homicidal... and it's getting worse.

Is it worth it to keep my lungs clean? Is this life? I think I may have to shorten my life by starting again in order to make it worth living. Lung disease seems preferable right now.

Smoking may reduce stress, anger and anxiety. It can lessen boredom, depression and help one deal with pain.

Ok, why do so many people drink? When statistics show that drinking alcohol KILLS your liver, and causes killings in car accidents.

Because after they become addicted, its all over for them. Those who decide to smoke after they've seen the commercials, now they are just idiots. And for the love of God, don't ever start to smoke yourself!
