While I don't mind the rationale behind the commercials I think its pretty sad that they need to make commercials to encourage people to call 911. I can understand someone being unwilling to get involved personally in the middle of something but is it really such a big deal to make that phone call?

Absolutely! It never hurts to call, even for false alarms. I think too many people do see things and think nothing of it or don't want to get involved and they could have prevented something. Those commercials were a great idea. I work at a call center that works directly with 911 and we have this motto: "When in doubt, send it out".

They might be helpful, but I think it depends largely on the area you live in. Larger cities tend to have a "not my business" attitude, while smaller populations are more likely to get involved, even if only for the sake of having something to do :p
