FFXII has a couple of quirks in loading on the older style PS2's. I own two fully working older models and they both have big trouble reading the FFXII disc but read other games just fine. I find that it takes a number of times (in some cases up to 20 attempts!) of popping the disc back in and going through the browser to try and boot it. The slimline PS2 I own boots it perfectly every time, which suggest to me that the game was tested very thoroughly on the newer hardware and the older one less so.

Patience and the ability to not vandalise your playstation for 'being stupid' seem to get you through the issue.

Which firmware version does your PS2 have (you can look at this in the screen before the browser screen) as I have a suspicion that this may be part of the issue?
