  • http://www.suscopts.org/evangelism/frames/what_happend.html "The sad division between the churches took place in year 451 AD in the Chalcedon Council. In this council, bishops representing churches from all over the world assembled to discuss matters related to the person of Christ. At the end of the meeting, a sharp division occurred among these churches. The Oriental Orthodox Churches decided on continuing to follow the same faith as it was delivered from Christ and His disciples, and these churches continue to do so until today. These churches are the Coptic Orthodox Church (Egypt), the Syrian Orthodox Church (Syria), the Indian Orthodox Church (India), The Ethiopian Orthodox Church (Ethiopia), and The Armenian Church (Armenia). The other churches decided to be in the other camp, let us refer to them here as the Western Churches."
  • I think there were other heresies and schisms before that but the split between the Eastern and Western churches was the first major one. (Oops, that was meant to be a comment)
  • Some Baptist groups will tell you with certainty and historical documentation that they trace their beliefs back to the beginning and everyone else departed from that beginning (note: many evangelical groups, including most Baptists, do not trace their roots through Protestantism). Roman Catholics believe everyone else departed from them. Eastern Orthodox likewise. The Bible indicates that there were false teachers in the church and even disagreements between the apostles in the early years during Pauls missionary journeys. Paul's letters not infrequently seek to correct doctrinal errors of various churches. Paul even criticized early believers for dividing themselves by teachings - 'One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas "' (1 Corinthians 1:12). These disagreements typically were about things I would not classify as "essential" Christian doctrine, but peripheral - and it seems people still split churches over dumb stuff like the color of hymn books for reasons that I really don't understand. While it is pretty clear that the Anglican and Protestant churches "broke away from" the Roman Catholic, I think it may be inappropriate to think there was one monolithic early christian congregation from which to break away.
  • I think it may have been the Gnostics. Many of them denied that Christ came in a true flesh and bone body (as well as many other Biblical truths.) Heretical doctrines such as these I believe are hinted in 1 John 4:3. I believe the Gnostics could have been the first, or one of the first to break away from true Biblical Christianity, but then again I could be wrong. If anyone finds any other information, feel free to let me know. Thank you and God bless you!
  • the religion that broke away from the early christian congregation, that Jesus established after his death, came to be known later as the apostate catholic church. this church was founded 300 years after christ, and the death of all the original first century christians. later came the breaking away of others, with the discontent of martin luther. these individuals though they had grievances against the catholic church, came to accept the same basic pagan doctrines the catholic church teaches. these would be the protestants. the catholic church and protestantism has come to comprise what is known as christendom. all these religions claiming to be "christian", have instead confused the masses. instead of teaching bible truths, they have upheld false teachings that have roots in ancient pagan babylon. they in turn have shown they are part of babylon the great, the world empire of false religion. very soon now she will meet her fate, when she is destroyed by the very ones she has committed spiritual adultery with. (revelation 17:1-17; 18:1-24) after that comes the destruction of the entire system of things, brought on by Jehovah God's incoming kingdom, with his Son, as the new ruler of the world. the nations are being warned now to "get ready to meet their maker" as an ancient prophet exclainmed at apostate jerusalem. just as she met her fate, so will the nations and individuals that did not respond to the warning being sounded out today!
  • Technically, it was the Christian religion that broke off of Judaism
  • I am a 66 year old man, that was raised catholic.Through the years of my life,I read and studied bibles, and always came up with to many questions and not enough answers. But, I do believe with all my heart that the true and first so called religion was christianity.Defined as simply a follower of christ.I also believe that the catholic religion was the first organized religion, that was formed by the romans and broke away from the true religion. Then the lutherns broke away. The only reasons that I could think of for these break aways would be the simple reason of greed and satification of making their own rules to fit their needs.I also believe that the reason all religious leaders,so called priest, rabis, preachers, ministers etc.honor the pope is because the catholic religion was the first to break away and that they were the so called closes to JESUS. I don`t care for any religion that has man made rules, other then the 10 commandments of GOD.As in catholic, where you must follow the seven so called sacraments to be a true catholic. These sacraments are not in any bible but are listed in the catholic version somewhere in the beginning of a saint james bible. And they give their rules and regulations.GOD made things simple for us by giving us his 10 comandments, and then sacrificed his own son to show us how wrong we were to disabey his laws. For People who have questions that they need answers to ,I give you this: Don`t question any more! for no one can answer these questions except God. And one day if you believe in him, you will get your answers directly from him. My father always told me to follow the 10 comandments that GOD has given the world to live by and you will never go wrong. Can you just immagine that every law in this world today, thousands of them in all countries, come from 10 simple comandments.SO, QUIT YOUR DOUBTS,AND FIND YOUR WAY TO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST,AND YOU WILL , LIVE A HAPPY AND CONTENT LIFE.
  • Christianity itself of course. It was established by Saul/Paul a few decades after Jesus' death. Jesus and his apostles were Jews, and remained Jews until the end. Jesus never expected or asked anyone to worship him - he'd have condemned such a person as an idolater. He did believe that he was the messiah, which meant the earthly king of Judea, but that was (and still is) a totally Jewish concept.
  • Since Christ came and established His church, there have always been heresies, divisions, and false teachers. Christianity was the intended result of the Old Testament teachings (see the book of Hebrews). As a group, Rome considered the Church a sect of Judaism until around the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 but Paul, Peter, Philip and others were already dealing with false prophets in the church long before then. It has always been the devil's goal to discredit Christ's people with counterfeits and copies but the True Church is that body of believers that believe in Jesus' person and work as presented throughout both Old and New Testaments of the Holy Scriptures: 1)Jesus Christ is God the Son, Creator of Heaven and Earth 2)Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the divinely appointed representative of God the Father here on earth. 3)Jesus Christ was born of a virgin. 4)Jesus Christ lived a perfectly sinless life. 5)Jesus Christ was betrayed, delivered up by those He had come to save, crucified on a Roman cross and literally, physically died for our sins. 6)Jesus Christ rose bodily from the grave three days following His crucifixion proving that His sacrifice for our sins was accepted by the Father. 7)Jesus Christ was seen of many witnesses, ascended into heaven, currenly makes intercession for us and is one day returning for His Church. 8)Jesus Christ is the sole propitiation for our sins separate and distinct from the false gods of the world and the false teachings of those that deny His deity and Lordship and is complete in itself "not of works" but by faith in His work alone. 9)Jesus Christ will one day return as the Judge to punish sin and restore His lost creation and on that day "every knee shall bow...and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father."
  • Paul speaks in the bible of certain ones breaking away, so it has been an ongoing breaking away, but yet he also speaks of the thing 'acting as a restraint' against the 'man of lawlessness'. 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2:3-12 The subject he is highlighting is the apostasy, or straying away from the truth. The question asked about the breaking away from the early christian congregation, and these origins were right from the start.
  • I suspect you mean denomination, not religion.
