OK, I'll give you the modern, common-sense answer: The ring goes back to the person who bought it.
Traditionally, if the man breaks off the engagement, the woman gets to keep the rings.
The "legal" rights would depend on your state. If he is suing to get the rings back, it will probably be less costly and troublesome for you in the long run to just return them.
Besides, do you really want these reminders of this cad around?
Theres is this girl that my brother used to date. They lived together for only about 3 or 4 months. She has my mothers big screen TV at her place and refuses for us to pick it up. What can the law do for this?

In Kentucky, why can a teenager get on an airplane without an adult present but he/she can not go swimming in a pool without someone 17 or over with them? (State law evidently)
