I do both. The software is helpful; but I still like to calculate my returns manually.

I've done it a few ways. The first few years I filed, I did it manually, filled out the form, and sent it in. Then, for a few years I was able to file over the telephone. That was very quick, and very easy, but then they cancelled that. Last year, I used one of the free e-file softwares that I found off a link from the IRS site. It was not very user-friendly. I knew what I was doing enough to complete it, but I didn't like it. This year, I used TurboTax online. I had to pay a small fee to file electronically, but it was definitely the easiest thing I've done so far (with the exception of the tele-file, but since thats gone now...). I've already filed and gotten my refund this year. I would definitely use that again.

I have been using TaxACT for the last five years. It is fast and easy, and I can electronically file and get my refund in about 10 days. Using software assures that you don't make addition mistakes or look the taxes up on the wrong line on the charts. It also prints out a very neat tax return if you wish to mail it in.

Tax software will not only help you avoid calculation mistakes, most programs guide you through the various income and deduction categories so you don't miss anything. There are plenty of on line programs that you can use free if you earn under $50,000 per year. Each one had different conditions. If you go the the IRS web site, they have a list.
