The evidence indicates that the rings are composed of particles that are mostly ice crystals, with sizes as large as centimeters or meters. The total mass in the rings is about the size of a medium mass moon, and the rings are only about 10 km thick.

A planetary ring is made up of particles that can very quite a bit in size. The vast majority of particles that we see in Saturn's ring are expected to be dust/sand size particles, but it's not uncommon to see large rock and boulders as part of a planetary ring.

Rings can even draw in small moons (though the moon will eventually create a gap in the ring as it gathers up the ring particles). Saturn has a couple small moons within it's ring structure, they are part of why Saturn has multiple rings instead of just one big one.

Rings are thought to have had to form after the planet. Either by a moon breaking up, a large asteroid strike ejecting matter from the planet into orbit, etc, which is why we see such variation int the size of objects in the rings.
