As a libertarian, I don't support the government dictating how the private economy operates.

The US economy does not have to "match" any other western economy. It exists based upon its own dynamics. In most cities, any high school graduate can get a $10 an hour job, they are not that rare. I challenge the notion that $10 is the dominant minimum wage in the civilized world.

If McDonald's pays everyone $10 an hour, how much will that dollar menu go to- $1.99? The consumer is the only person who puts dollars into a company to pay higher wages.

BTW- don't illegal immigrants who work for low wages make it more difficult to earn $10 per hour?
They'll work for $5? Would you rather have one worker at $10 or two workers at $5?

Perhaps we should compare ourselves to that economic powerhouse, China, and pay low skill workers 50 cents a day? Then there'd be lots of manufacturing jobs available.

Got news for you. Minimum wage in Ontario, Canada has only just been boosted to $8/hr. America is not "catching up" at all. I believe it's ahead of that.

When I was in the U.S I noticed that within the food and hospitality industry that many employees rely mostly on tips for pay, becuase they are paid such a low wage ... It seems the customer has to pay for a service or a product supplied and then is responsible for paying a part of that staff persons wage ... It seems the business owner is fortunate both ways, he receives top dollar for a product or any service sold and does'nt have to pay a decent wage by relying on the customer to pay a % of the wages for him ... Not in Australia, you do a job you get paid for it, any tip is a bonus not a necessity. Its like the saying goes I guess ... The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

(My opinion only, no offense intended)
