I do as well, and it makes my day to receive one. It's satisfying to hold a letter written by someone's hand, and lovely that they took the time and care to do so. There was a time, not so long ago, when letter writing was a real craft.
This past valentine's day i handwrote a loving letter to my fiance and ofcourse he loved it. When my grandparents were alive, i wrote to them all the time. They loved getting letters from me and used to tell me i am their favoraite grand-daughter :).
I hope no-one minds but considering the effort all of you have taken to share your answers and lives even if for a moment, I really wanted to take the time in return and make an individual comment for everyone.
Thank you so much
Today has been a really big day - I've been dealing with some major health issues and for 2 years have been unable to consume anything other than soup, chocolate, potato-chips, coffee/tea and alcohol - it's not as fun as it sounds and I've reallly put on alot of weight. I went to alot of specialists in the last 2 years and was told I was making it up, that it was in my head, that I just needed to get exercise and lose weight etc. I was accused of being bullimic (being unable to keep food down), anorexic (when I was thinner - when it all began) and relatives as well as those I knew tried to force me to eat - including a memorable occasion when one dominating family senior tried to force me to stay seated till I finished what was on my plate (I am 30 years old). My husband and I have been called difficult to our faces and behind our backs and I even lost a friend over it - she offered to buy me dinner as a present despite knowing I couldn't keep food down).
Well, today I saw yet another specialist and after an hour of tests and much pain and discomfort (they made me eat eggs laced with radiation dye) they saw that there was an actual physical problem - so yeah, today is a poignant day but I was so stressed out this morning waiting to go to the specialist's office until I wrote this question and began reading the replies.
So to everyone who wrote in, I thank you so much - you've no idea how much this helped.
And no, don't rate me up for this reply, I'm not doing it to earn points. Just wantin to express my gratitude to all who helped and who took it seriously. I just hope no-one minds me being open and honest about what's been going on for me.
I always write to my distant friends at Christmas and they do likewise. It's really nice to receive a proper letter you can handle and read again and again, especially when they contain photo's.
I like to send cards to people, especially thank you cards. I love getting fun, animated cards by e-mail, but sometimes a thoughtful handwritten card is just what I needed. Even a funny card with my nephew's signature is great. You just can't send that stuff on a computer. Well, I guess you can if you scan it. But you know what I mean.
Last time was about 3 month ago. I was writting a letter to my grandparents cause my grandfather doesn't like computers.
It was to my daughter when she was deployed. I tried to write her & send pictures about every 3-5 days, even though she would call when she could or email. She told me later how special it was for her to get mail & to share it with all her buddies.
I do it all the time! I love the "feeling" a handwritten letter gives. It's much more personal. I haven't used the mail in ages, tho, since here in Mexico a letter can delay for three or four weeks before delivery. I usually give my handwritten letters in hand... =)

Strangely enough, January 20th. Before then, I can't even remember.
Weekly to my son in Japan, and to two nephews in Iraq.
hi,today.i always write letters by hand personal or otherwise.i have a computer which i use for this and that, but i find a letter is more personal to the person who ever they might be,it shows you have taken time out for them...regards..tessa5
A few weeks ago. Actually, I have two specific friends(eccentric Capricorn males) who always write, long interesting letters to me...never email...they don't like the phone much...I've actually kept the majority of them in a box over the years...(not quite sure why)
Last week i sent two postcards to friends:-)
About 2 weeks ago. And I'm getting ready to mail off a card to a friend.
3 weeks ago I hand wrote a letter to my fiance and i mailed it to him lol
no,but it's a good idea recently i found many old style postcards i will send to some friend it also would be nice to get one
I send "snail mail" to some people but i usually use e-mail or i call them and take it over there. I've never really trusted that my letters will really get there so i only send less important things.
Indeed I do, occassionally. It's just I end up seeing them before I post the letter, then have to rewrite.
My godfather sent me and my brother $20,000 for university payments. That entitles him to a finely written letter!
I just went to a fantastic restaurant (http://www.danslenoir.com/london/), and they had little flyer-postcards that they offered to stamp and send anywhere in the world. So I thought I'd send a short hello to my special friend in Denmark.
A month ago, A Letter to my boyfiend, So many more things I wanted to say to him before he had to go to Heaven.
Last month to my Mom and Dad. I was bored at work and sick of the internet so I wrote them a letter.
The last time i PROPERLY sat down to write something was on Valentine's day but i was in the same room as the person it was for along with about 10 other people. I pretended i was doing homework and had my bag, my book and one of my friends sitting around me like in a fort!
I eventually wrote it and although it was in a bit of a rush, i wrote something meaningful and i eventually gave the card to the person who means so much to me.
The amazing thing is that it wasn't a card saying i loved her or that i liked her, i just wanted to let her know that i cared about her.
I eventually gave her it , having to run after her after i thought she had left school early, but i was really happy with myself for making the effort and she was really happy and thought it was really thoughtful.
Last week..to the ex. He has to come up with the rest of the $$ he owes me, or it's court time again. At least that's what I told him..but I'll probably drop it!
To my nephew two days ago. He is only 1 year old but I like to think he will read them someday. I wrote to my man who is away right now. He got a series of annotated photo postcards of our daughter and me.
About a week ago I wrote a letter to my granddaughter. I try to write to her a couple of times a month. My last visit, I was touched to discover that she saves them all.
i try to write letters by hand and mail then often, i like the personal feel thay have to them. The last one i wrote and mailed was sent out last thrusday to a friend of mine in TX.
About 2 weeks. I like to send letters.
I wrote my grandmother in April and sent her a baseball schedule, as I do every year. She used to take me to games when I was a kiddo.
you mean through the post?
A month. My best friends daughter is in the pen and i try to write her once a month or so
I wrote one about a week ago to make sure I still could. E mail has spoiled me, but I am going to get out of that. I like to get letters so it's only fair that I write them. :-)
Today! To a friend from college...asking for his e-mail address.
Email is fast, but doesn't last. We delete these messages or lose them when our computers crash. There is nothing quite so satisfying as looking in your mailbox and finding that someone has sent you a letter or a card. And reading it over and over and saving it in a box is great. I hope the art of letter writing never dies.
Only my brother who is in prison he does not have internet access butother than that no
I wrote a ton of thank you letters for Christmas last month.. Prolly about a month before that I wrote a letter to my friend in the Coast Guard..
About 4 weeks ago. Sarah, the 10 yr old daughter of my friend, wants to be old enough to babysit but she is just too young. I let her "take care" of my son while I was busy. She really was a big help to me and kept him out of my feet. So, I wrote her a thank you card.
It was so long ago i can't remember. Years ago.
Many months ago +5
sheesh... you know, i can't even remember when, that's how long ago!
a few months ago to a client - but it is a thing of the past - which is a shame - how will history remember us if they don't read email?
About 3 days ago, though I do most days. (However, the USPS has for the past 14 years decided to fail to deliver much of my mail, often deliberately misdirecting it by returning it to me without any endorsement explaining why when the to and from addresses are in the proper places and legible, and even going so far as to slit open some of my mail and then return it to me. I am pretty sure that the Calumet MI PO or employees there deliberately attempted to destroy my art exhibit "Love and Loneliness" at Omphale Gallery in August by sending many of the postcards I sent out to promote it back to the gallery, and the carrier swore at me when I dared to complain.)

I don't remember, but I will be writing hand written letters and mailing them to people I care about this summer.

I agree, I've saved some I received from people who have since died, and I'm glad I have them

I love to read letters written in the 19th century. I have an old book of letters from Mr. Alcott to his daughters (including Louisa May). Even the children wrote beautifully then.

It's definitely an art form

It is still a real craft, only it is practiced by fewer people. I have been known to handwrite letters and even use my mother's manual typewriter to communicate with friends. I wish there were still real penpals out there. I love getting personal mail.
