Names Have Been Blotted out to Protect the Innocent!
This was a convention usual to that era.
Curses (of course, Never appearing in Bronte's books) were blotted out so: "D---e" for Damme, and "Z---ds" for Zounds! (Yes, this was considered a swear word back then!) Read "Tom Jones" for that kind of fun--Squire Western's conversation is a hoot!
Even Treasure Island was submitted to this treatment. To conceal the dates, Stevenson used: "17--."
