Oh, hell yes.
In all cases, the reason was to get things straight in my own mind, but reading them now, it seems I was pretty messed up back then. (Guess I didn't "send" them, did I?)
Some I read to the girl - in person or over the phone. Some I didn't.
I advocate it, myself. Even if you don't send them. Again, they will help you get things straight. (See http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2759724 , and #3, here http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2762628 .)
I wrote a letter and then burnt it.I felt much better afterwards.
Yes......I did not die......end of subject!

You're reading Have you ever written and sent a letter that will never be read? If so why?

Oh yeah I totally agree with getting things straight in your head but maybe they are meant to stay there safely in your head.
I sent mine and I wish I hadn't. I thought it would help but I didn't I think I made things worse. I just should have left it alone.

I probably looked pathetic to her with those letters. You never know how someone else will react. But it was something I had to do, and I believe it helped me in the long-run. Actually, the songs and poems probably helped me even more, but I think I did them after I did the letters. They are so much "tighter" than letters, you REALLY have to get things straight for them. So, in certain respects, I consider the letters a "first draft" for my songs. And I saved them in a file I have seldom opened. One day, I will, and see if I can get some more songs or poems out of the feelings I felt back then. Meanwhile, they're in the file cabinet. ;-)
.
(No... Don't "keep it in your head"... Get it out on paper, and file it away. Try to let the bad feelings you put into the letter go as you file it away for future reference. When you feel so much better, you can read them, if you wish, and wonder what you were thinking.) ;-)
