You can do both. You can write what you love in spare time, you can write what makes money like a 9 to 5.
Most writers do that anyways - at least until they sell something and make enough money to quit the rut.
Most of the people I know who write (with published books) still do stuff like ghost write, columnist, etc, to pay the rent. They do novels for love.
I do both. Write schmuck stuff for cash, write my own book when I have time.
