What is the importance of drugs in medicine?

    Very Important, are you Refering to "Drugs" as in Drugs of abuse, or plain old Drugs, and of OTC, or Rx

    before we had anit-psychoics, 10% were treated,with the treaments avable, and the other 90% were locked
    up in jails, aslyiums, (for schzophrania, and others)(and my math is way off )

    But mainly drugs are used for the treatment of the symtoms, not the cure of the illnesses,

    Cannabis/pot/marjuana, before, the 1937s, were, used as treaments for insomia, colds, pain, nausea, headaces
    and others,

    and cocaine, is used for eye and ear surgerys(in usa), and alitude sickness(in its native country),

    Im not competely sure what your refering to as just "drugs" theres alot of importence in all the subcatgorys, as well as the wide term ,( i could probby type many many pages on this subject)
