We in Australia like to shorten the name of everything! We shorten our own names, other peoples (even when they don't like it) and even our own country name! Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

Australia, Australia, Australia! Oi Oi Oi just doesn't have the same ring to it! It is definitley an affectionate term! BTW - No too many other country names shorten so well - Englandie, Francie, Africaie, Americaie, Chinaie .... nup ..... just .... Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!!!!

It is definitely not a racial slur, we love the terms Aussies. We even call Victorians Mexicans because they live south of the border.

No, it's not a slur, it's just an abbreviation, and Aussies themselves seem to like it. It's good that you tried to find out if it's an insult. Sometimes asking is the only way to find out. If it were a slur, you'd call it a national slur instead of a racial slur. Discrimination on the basis of national origin is just as illegal in the United States as discrimination on the basis of race, so that part is the same. :)

I don't know why ppl call Austraillians Aussie, but I don't see any racists reasonings behind it. Why do Brits call Americans Yanks? I like to look at it as terms of endearment. :D

No its not a slur, its like calling British people "Brits" or Americans "Yanks", I'd argue that its more or less a term of endearment of that particular nation.

We love to be called Aussies. We call our Prime Minister John Howard, Johnny. We call football, footy. And when we have a beer we have a tinny or a stubby. See we keep it cool down here. Lets meet Johnny at the footy with our tinny!!! Oi Oi Oi

in Australia there are 2 endings that get used alot -ie/y (aussie, stubbie, tinnie, footy) -o (rego, bottlo, shoppo) so auss+ie makes AUSSIE
