IT could very possibly be a mating ritual. Any chance that you can capture that on video and post that?

Painted turtles do have a similar sounding mating ritual. They face one another and the male shakes (or dances they call it) while attempting to stroke the female with his long claws. My painted turtle is only with fish but he still jumps in the water and does it to his own reflection!

That is mating behavior. If your tank were much larger -- as big as a pond, you'd see the male swim in front of the female and then turn to face her. He swims backwards as she continues to swim forwards. He then uses his front feet to send little currents of water onto her sensitive face and neck, and if things go well, he will eventually move up to actually stroking her face and neck lightly with his claws. The female may shake her paws at him for the same reason, but generally he starts it and does most of the caressing, and he does ALL of the swimming-backward part. It's very romantic when you see them "dancing" this way prior to mating in a larger body of water than a tank. Very graceful. :)
