I think there is something in plastic bags that mimmicks the scent of another cat. When I eat a truffle, my crazy orange cat is waiting to steal the wrapper with his mouth and run away with it.

To our cats, it's nothing special unless we want to read or use it. Then its' the perfect place to nap or play. And don't get me started about grocery bags! I cannot remove them until they are done playing hide and go seek for at least 20 minutes!

Here's a photo of our doubledecker cats.

I believe it has something to do with body temperature since cats LOVE to be warm, it is an excellent way to keep in their heat since plastic is so insulated.

The answer to this phenomenon is that many plastics contain a substance similar to cat pheromone (not to be confused with a pheramone), this substance is calming in cats, some cats crave this and chew the plastic grocery bags to get more. Care should be taken that cats are not eating the bags as this can often become a digestive tract bloackage.

I know what you mean. Our cat also loves to lie down on anything smooth. She seems to favor gift wrap and plastic shopping bags. Since we got our cat as an adult from the Animal Protection League, I had a theory that she may have been trained on newspaper to use her little box, but the tendency to sit, stand and lie on smooth paper is common among many cat owners I talk to.

Besides injesting plastic if they nibble on it, a plastic bag can kill your cat. There are now many horror stories of cats becoming caught in a plastic bag and smothering. One person I knew had two cats. One went into a plastic bag and the other laid on top of it. When she came into the room the cat in the bag looked like it had been shrink wrapped. She caught it in time but had she been another 5 or 10 minutes her cat would have died. Here is an excellent short article about cats and plastic bags. Go to Contents page and scroll down for the title about plastic bags

I have a sneaking suspicion that it is because they want all of your attention. Even if they don't really want it, they don't want you to give it to someone/something else. I have to keep pushing them away from my computer so they won't lay on it.

I think that this is the most annoying thing about cats. Well... that and the occasional break for freedom. They always come back with fleas!

Possibly cats like the slight odor that it has and the texture is nice on their tongues. Think about it, they roll in it to keep the scent. They lick it because it feels interesting to them.

Something in plastic. How ever with the rumor of certain plastics such as bottles and reealable containers, it has let out certain mocking horrmones in the human system sililar to esterogen, would the receptors be similar in cats? I am not for sure since I am not a vet. But I cant imagine it being of the same composition.

It's the crinkly sound and feeling. My cat actually likes to chew on the plastic grocery bags.

I just asked my neighbors cat this question. (actually I am borrowing without permission) The cat's answer is "because we can" or "do you have another piece of liver". I don't speak fluent cat.
