I don't know some places may require it...but if you don't please don't hit any trees; several people are killed every ski season from hitting trees. Most have massive head injuries. At least a helmet may reduce the chances of head and brain injuries and even death.

If you never crash, no it's not. OTOH, I have been skiing since I was twelve (I won't admit how many decades that is, but my first set of new skis were endorsed by the Mahre brothers...:-D...) and I have *never* bothered wearing a helmet. If you're not getting "big air" or skiing through trees at speed, then the chances a helmet sparing you injury are pretty small.

For safety purposes I think it is advisable to wear a helmet. I always do when I slalom between the trees.
