Question

Help answer this question below.

I have never run nor done much aerobic activity and find myself wanting to start running for health benefits at the age of 38 years old (female). If I run on the treadmill, my lungs feel like they are going to explode after 2 1/2 mins. Suggestions?

I would say dont run yet. a great workout on a treadmill to get your muscles strong and heart rate up is to.... set your incline up a couple knotches and slow the speed to a slow- to normal pace. do this for a couple minutes and set the incline to 0 and alternate back every 5-10 minutes for a half an hour. This will burn a lot of calories, great aerobics and will give you a great tushy tightening core workout GOOD LUCK

You dont say what pace you are going but it sounds like its too fast. You need to start at a slower pace that you can comfortably keep to, even alternating with walking when you first start out.
When I first started running I couldnt even keep it up for more than a few mins. at a time, you need to build on a little more each session, until you can do 20-30 minutes a time , as a base.

they may feel like exploding if you run too fast.
i suggest running on a trail or local track at your own pace to see how you do b/c at least i have found that i cant run on treadmills too well b/c i either run too fast or too slow and they are boring for me b/c you run in the same place indoors.
dont force yourself to run the entire time, take about a min walk break when you need it and it actually does help w/improving your running

How fast are you running? Might I suggest a fast walk/slow jog to start off with.

Also you may not be the running type, I'm in pretty good shape but I certainly don't run very well when it comes to distance.

But I ballroom dance about three times a week and thats pretty good aerobic excersize. On Fridays I'm doing it for pretty much two hours straight with very few breaks.

Also maybe try doing some other aerobic activity that's not quite so intense as all-out running, maybe a step aerobics class or even power walking. Work your way up to running though, it shouldn't be as uncomfortable as it is for you right now.

personal trainers are a good way to start or join a running club. either will help to keep you motivated and to set you out at a healthy place to beigin. if you start off too hard, and it soundls like you are, you are more likely to feel pain and pain is a major factor in quitting. find a friend. talk test, trainer, borg anything that helps you maintain a comfortable pace initally. you dont need to "kill" yourself if its only for recreation or health gains, the only people who do that are elite runners who are testing their limits in terms of improvement and they do it in controlled manners.
good luck and stick with it, it has major rewards!

Start off slow, talk to a doctor, maybe you need a physical. Seriously.
