If your child has a disability, there are often major costs and you may not be able to work because your child requires round the clock care. The child can't take care of the bills, so the money is sent to the parent who is paying the bills.
We have an autistic child who demands constant medical attention, SSI offsets the cost of things that the insurance will not pay. For example, due to his problems, he is not toilet trained, therefore his check eases the burden of the cost of pull-ups for him. It is basically to ease the costs associated with having a child with problems. That check allows my wife to be home with him, rather than to put him in and out of daycares. Or, it would help pay for that if she chose to work, as his autism causes a daycare charge to be higher.
If your child is disabled, the child can receive SSI disability, if the parent has limited income and resources. The money is sent to the parent on behalf of the minor child and must be used for the child. The money is not for the parent.
