It might. (I can't say for certain because I don't know you or your ability level.) Singing requires a certain level of natural ability. You need to be able to control your breathing, voice and to be able to distinguish one not from another. You also need be able to which direction you are off of a note so that you can correct your voice. If you have these abilities, then it is mostly just a matter of practice, practice, practice to hone them. Voice lessons can be helpful, but they aren't necessary. You just need to sing. Whether this be along as part of a band or choir or just with a radio or CD.

To add to Glenn's excellent answer, singing along with another voice is much easier than singing by yourself.

A lot of people who have reasonable voices when singing along with a song find they cannot pitch properly when singing by themselves. It's easier to adjust your voice to another singer's pitch.

Also, you will find that the quality of your voice is harder to judge when singing along as your voice will be mixed with a professional singer's, making it sound better. Indeed, an old recording engineer's trick when recording a singer who isn't quite up to scratch is to double track the vocals (recording the singer twice and mixing the two vocal tracks) as two voices in unison tends to sound better than one.

What you should do is find a good karaoke cd and try singing to that. This will give you a much better insight into your natural vocal ability.

    Edit: Ok, Glenn? ;)

I have no scientific data but I can say that with over 20 years of singing along to pop music I am still just as horrible a singer as ever. :)

I think singing along is fine for fun but if you want to improve your singing voice you will need to at least be aware of singing techniques and use them when singing.

Another great help is a feedback system so you can hear yourself as you sing. It can be scary, but definitely help you truly 'hear yourself'.

Just singing along with pop songs alone? Absolutely not. How are you going to know if you're improving when all you're doing is singing along with the radio? Also, people without the right training are more likely to injure their voices when trying to imitate pop singers, so there's a risk factor involved.
