Lets not go overboard with this, on most products that is NOT an 'expiration' date, but is a 'sell by' date. And still good to eat for a week or two after. Even months depending on the product.
-
I look over everything, especially since I bought a package of peanuts in a gas station that had expired. Usually the date is a sell by and you can skate by a few days after the date. But in this case the date was long past (I didn't check this time) and when I opened the package, there was all this funny, stringy, growy, mold inside.

Any fresh (non-canned) food and medicines/vitamins. Do I follow it? Not strictly (except with meds/vits). Sour milk will not KILL you. It tastes like crap is about all. I use my eyes, nose and taste buds on milk, eggs, meat, lunch meat, salads, fruit, veggies, etc. Oh, yeah... And my fingers (feel) on some of those (if they're slimy, they're bad). I grew up before most everything HAD expiration dates. (BTW: "Expiration" date or "Sell-by" date? Most things will last at least a week, if not more, past the "sell-by" date, even if slightly discolored. If it smells bad, if it tastes bad, if it's green, if it's moldy, if it's slimy, it's bad. Otherwise, it's good.)
