My 2001 Pontiac Sunfire overheated today while I was driving on the thruway. The temp gauge went from 195 to 260 almost instantly and my check gages and check engine lights came on. The anitfreeze

    How cold is it where you are? It sounds to me like your coolant may have frozen. I had a lovely boss once who was too cheap to put antifreeze in his truck. Of course, the water froze and blew the head gasket and it did almost exactly what you just described. He learned a lesson about antifreeze being cheaper than new heads and head gaskets.

    U didn't finish thought, but by all means have the Compression checked & a "Leak Down Test" performed to Determine if U "Blew or Warped" the Head/Head Gasket. Test the Cooling System for "Leaks" (Expansion/Freeze Plugs), Water Pump, Hoses, Thermostat etc.. Check for Water in Oil/Oil in Water. Good Luck! John
