My friend, do not listen to anyone on here that suggests that you train in any of the "traditional martial arts," Karate, tae kwon do, japanese jiu jitsu, kung fu, aikido etc. they are practically usless in the cage. Find a real MMA gym and begin there. You'll learn wrestling, brazillian jiu jitsu, boxing and muay thai boxing. You will need to be will rounded to do well.

For MMA cage fighting some good choices are:

    -Kickboxing
    -Judo
    -Brazilian Jiu Jutsu
    -Grappling
    -Vale Tudo

Keep in mind that many MMA champs have one art as a specialty and then add to that base. Kung fu is a really broad term that refers to a variety of different Chinese styles. You WILL need to learn boxing, wrestling and submissions to compete in MMA. But doing Kung-fu couldn't hurt.

Kung Fu is not going to help you in cage fighting. I would say a combination of Boxing, Judo and Yoga would be your best bet. Good Luck! Flexibility, balance, and being able to throw a solid right cross will do the trick.

there are a lot of elements of kung fu that will help you in a fight, but there's a lot that's simply not legal in a fight. it also really depends on how you are learning it - if your school emphasizes reading your opponent's moves and energy, then you will have an advantage. i don't know if you will get a good grappling base from kung fu, but you can get good speed and stand up skills.

if you get good at kung fu, you will have a lot of skills that other fighters may not have. but you also need to do some ju jitsu and and judo, even if it's just to get a feel for the moves that your opponents will have.

personally, i love kung fu, i practice kung fu, but i am also a fan of mma and i don't really see kung fu having much of a place there. it's just very different from what the fighters usually do. if you work hard at kung fu though, i have no doubt that you could be a very competitive fighter.

You do need a mix. My personal favorite is jujitsu, because you can flat stop somebody and muck them up at the same time. But it's more 'in-fighting'. Good for handling those long armed folks.
Tae-quon-do, on the other hand, is more stand-off, and comes in handy to keep distance from your opponent.
Judo is a good close in-hand type of fighting; great for getting an opponent down.
Kung fu is ... well, okay, but the distractive techniques are more useful than some of the other stuff if you learn the basics of all.
Spar. Study. Spar some more. And diversify your techniques, because your future opponents *will* be diverse!
