It depends on the shade you are looking for - if its a neon or bright pink shade then only vegetable dyes tend to give these vibrant results. If its a less vibrant colour then some supermarkets or beauty shops can sell these as permanent colours but they normally not near as bright as the vegetable ones in general.

Some vegetable dyes such as Special Effects Atomic Pink have been known to last for months rather than weeks on some people's hair and there are things you can do to prolong the dye results such as avoiding hot water adn some anti-dandruff style shampoos and rinsing hair in cold water. I love coloring my hair, and I've tried everything! My favorite semi permanent is Natural Instincts by Clairol. The smell isn't strong and it leaves my hair feeling more conditioned than when I started. Plus you can get it at any drugstore or Target or Walmart.

I'm not sure if you want your hair to be completely red....if that's the case zarmalar had great advice. If you still want to have a more natural looking red I suggest Cinnaberry or Rosewood by Clairol. Your hair will have a nice red shimmer but won't look completely unnatural. It will also only cost you 7 or 8 dollars.

If you do decide to bleach your hair and use Manic Panic I would definitely go to a beauty supply store like Sally's Beauty and ask for some help. The employees can help you pick a developer and bleach powder combination that will work for your hair type and lighten your hair enough to really pick up a rich and vibrant color. It will cost you a few more dollars for the bleach and Manic Panic. I'd say around 30 dollars all together...but if you want really really RED hair it's the best way to go for at home coloring. If you bleach you'll definitely want to do a strand test and consider buying a deep conditioner because it will dry out your hair. Also, this option is definitely not temporary and will need major upkeep. The natural instincts color will fade out naturally or you can color again in a few weeks if you liked the results. With darker hair it won't rinse out in 28 shampoos like the box says, but your roots won't grow in as noticably. I like to think of it as "oops" proof.

Another option could be using a Henna rinse but if you've colored before it might not react correctly and you'll have some interesting results.

Anyway, gloves, towels, and well ventilation are a must!! Good luck and happy coloring! I hope this was helpful!

a bright cherry red? if so you will have to bleach it. or the color will not show as bright as you want. as far as a good temp dye, i recomend Manic Panic hair dye. it has a great selection of brightly colored dyes and you can find it at sally hansen beauty supply stores. or hot topic also carries some. Dont forget gloves and to use a old towel :P have fun!
