No. most convicted felons are not insane.

They are just mean people and a threat to society.

In the majority of cases I doubt if it would make any difference to the convicts future behaviour if they went to see a psychiatrist instead of prison.

what might be useful is to have psychiatrists available to inmates in jail for those who would want to use them / might gain from their use.

Of course its only worth it if it is likely to decrease the crime rate i..e saving money and misery in the long run.

(Assuming you're talking about the US...)

Of course not. If a person needs psychiatric treatment, then that's all well and good. But to say that they don't need to be in prison is just crazy talk.

Prison has four functions: to punish criminals, to protect society through criminal isolation, to deter others from committing crime, and to rehabilitate the criminals. However, that last function is the least well-executed. As many of you know, prison is a criminals' college. Seldom does a criminal "learn his lesson" after emerging from prison. On the contrary, they learn how to be better criminals. This is just one of many criticisms of the prison system.

Although psychiatric treatment is a good thing, prison is necessary but flawed. Too bad this isn't the Utopian States of America.

No, I think they have to want to change in order to change, so Psychiatric Treatment might not help in many situations! Plus I wouldn't want to have a murderer running around free just because they are going to counseling!

Well I do feel that there are way to many people locked up because of various psychiatric disorders that resulted in wrong decision making. For HARD CORE criminals,I think prison+intensive therapy is a good idea.
For all the rest,a psychiatric treatment facility is in order if they are found to have a mental disability that effects thier decision-making or problem solving skills,or impairs thier judgement.
For drug or alcohol related offenses, rehab and counseling/therapy.
For sex crimes against a child,3rd offense,I think we should chop off some hands and cut out some tongues and a penis if they got one. They really would not be much of a threat after that.

I think, since Phsycos can con thier physcologists, that anyone who needs to be in a phsych ward, should be there, with no possibility of release.

No very few of them would be helped by psychiatric treatment. That is regrettably an idealised view of the world .
Give an evil person treatment and they will become good.
No it does not work because most people that commit crimes are not either insane or mentally unstable in any way, just plain dishonest.
    devious or downright evil
I cannot believe that the General Public would want paedophiles , murderers and rapists on the streets just attending psychiatric clinics.
It has been proved by mistakes made in Britain letting out people who were killers who have immediately raped and killed again

Hm...atleast in psychiatric treatment it might be harder to get raped. I'd rather to go psychiatric treatment anyway. I guess it might actually help some of them rather than just dumping them in prison, yeah i guess i would say so.

I worked in a large state prison system for several years a while back and this is what was known then:
-- prisoners have a higher rate of head and brain injuries than the general population, usually from child abuse. This is known to cause epilepsy in some people, but epilepsy is not related to criminal activity. Brain injury, however, is, because it affects a person's ability to regulate their moods and control their behavior.
-- prisoners have a higher rate of brain defects at birth due to maternal AND paternal drug and alcohol use. Again, this may affect their ability to control their moods and behavior.
-- prisoners have a higher rate of child abuse and, even without physical damage to the brain, this causes psychological damage.
-- a lot of prisoners commit crimes either to feed their addictions, or while they are high on drugs (including alcohol). Addiction is a medical problem, and some day, we will be able to do a lot more to cure addiction than we can right now.

So -- the answer is, some convicts would be rendered less dangerous by getting them medical treatment than by throwing them in prisons that don't have medical care and aren't designed to treat medical defects and/or psychiatric disabilities. Some prisons are designed for this, but not enough of them, and the ones that exist are not well-funded.

No,it is not so much that I am ignorant as it is that you are narrow minded and can only see your side of the coin as with most of your arguements that should have been merely discussions. But I do see where you would be good at if you took the time to expand your narrow viewpoints and look outside your much loved self.
