So you would want public schools to carry Madonna's Sex in a library for children? Of course they should. They should be able to exercise discretion in what they put on the shelves for kids. That doesn't mean they need to ban every book for silly reasons, but some things are just so innappropriate for kids that it is ridiculous to even think about putting them on the shelves. Truthfully, I think a lot of what is out there for kids right now is totally innappropriate and it usually isn't the stuff being banned. When I took my adolescent lit class in college, I was appalled by how depressing most of the assigned Newberry candidates were. I barely made it through reading them, and I was always an avid reader who usually devoured a half dozen or more books a week. I don't wonder that kids aren't reading anymore. I wouldn't have learned to read fluently if that was what I'd been offered.

I sort of agree with this. The books should be somewhat appropriate for the kids. I wouldn't want my 12 year old reading something like "Naked Lunch". I was reading books way above my level when I was in school but there are some books that just are not for children.

It depends on the nature/contents of the book. I agree that they should prohibit books with sexually explicit contents and violence. However, if that means banning books on science, the answer is a humongous NOOOOOOOO!

Why do people feel the need to hide things from children? Do they not want the children to become better informed and educated than they were? Or are they scared of that?

Of course. For instance, although I have enjoyed Victorian era erotica from time to time, it doesn't belong in a school library. Schools have limited funds for libraries. There are so many classic works that no school system could possibly afford to own a copy of each. Stock the treasure and ban the trash. I've always been astounded at how poorly read our public school students are in comparison with the students in the UK. I think theirs would be a good program to emulate. It stresses the classics. It works.

ANYTHING ANY BOOK which tempts children to read is OK with me. Oh, and BTW now-a-days if the child wants a "banned book" he can usually get it from the local book pusher... Borders has almost EVERYTHING, and they allow people to read before buying!
