If you're referring to Hamas, people in that region have been launching hundreds of rockets into Israel. Hamas has a habit of blending into (as in, hiding behind) the civilian population, making it difficult or impossible to distinguish between someone who is militant and a bystander.
Israel's response may have been heavy-handed but when you're surrounded by countries who'd love to see you completely destroyed, that tends to happen. I doubt any country in the world would have simply stood by and allowed its neighbors to continually launch attacks against their population on any level.
Unfortunately in the US there has been a great deal of denial about the situation in Palestine. Perhaps now the Israelis have used phosphorus bombs on children in a UN-run school, that might change the general perception in the US. The situation with the Palestinians has been dragging on for years, years of suffering, and it is a disgrace to humanity.
I hope that now Obama is president, Americans might become more aware of what is happening over there, and will not give such unqualified support to what is, despite the justifications, a brutal regime.
There are not very many countries interested in "policing" the rest of the world, and if there were, they would have clamped down on the Palestinians a long time ago for constantly violating the cease fire they agreed to in the first place.
They "get away" with it because it's legally and morally justified.
The fighting has been going back and forth for thousands of years.
They have a powerful ally in the U.N., the U.S.A.
The same way that the US gets away with what they've done to the Iraqis. One day, however, it's all gonna catch up to them and it won't be pretty
Zionism is evil. The Palestinian holocaust in front of numerous blided eyes around the globe.
My 2 cents.
How do Arab countries get away with what they have done to the Palestinians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_September_in_Jordan) and their own people (despotism, corruption, economic incompetence)?

It's quite simple: The Palestinians are reaping what they've been sowing for 60 years.

There are too many people here in the states who would oppose the U.S. seriously intervening yo...
I don't care who's right and who's wrong, the blatant slaughter of civilians has to stop. U.N. Peacekeepers, where are you?
Can we just shoot that parcel of land into space and rehome everybody or something? It's never going to end!
Israel's leading ultra-Orthodox party, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef say all Palestinians should perish. How will this impact peace talks?

Am I missing something? The Jewish people were basically given Palestine (now known as Israel) by the US and GB in 1947, meanwhile the Palestinians were forced to look on as the Jews got more and more powerful. The US gave them an atomic bomb! Now Palestinians are forced to live as second class citizens in their own country. Hamas can only do so much, but if your country had been a victim of such a huge injustice then wouldn't you do the same? Sometimes you can't just have a peaceful chat about something to solve a problem, they need to send a message, unfortunately for the Palestinians they cannot compete with the force of Israel. Jews took 86% of Palestinian land, throwing them out of their homes and segregating them.

So you're suggesting that Hamas' terrorism is justified?
by .avallach on January 20th, 2009
Perhaps American Indians should start blowing up our homes and buildings too.

Are you aware of the fact that Hammas has been labeled terrorist by the US and Israel and they are the elected government of Palestine? What if the world now decided that the US and Israel were the terrorist? Why do you people cherry pick your fact?
by Mephistopheles on January 20th, 2009
Everyone in this debate has always cherry-picked their facts.

Unfortunately, it's not just this debate but the whole country. They all seem to blindly believe anything & everything the government tells them. Sad, very sad indeed
by Mephistopheles on January 20th, 2009
The word terrorist is used too lightly, I would personally label them freedom fighters. What you Americans did to the Native Americans is terrible but what you have to realise is that the Palestinian injustice is still fresh and has close ties to every Palestinian alive today, be it their grandparents, parents, or them first hand. The American government f-ed up once again and now innocent people are suffering for no reason.
by Lucky_Marty on January 20th, 2009
To me, a group that indiscriminately fires rockets into a civilian area, not targeting the military, then hides among their own civilians to make it impossible to strike back without civilian casualties is a terrorist. Call me old fashioned.
by .avallach on January 20th, 2009
I agree with you to an extent, but at the end of the day you have to go to the root of the problem. What would you do if you were in their position?
by Lucky_Marty on January 21st, 2009
Negotiate. Talk. It seems like every time people in that region of the world sit down and actually talk, things tend to go well until someone fires a rocket or sets off a bomb, then they fight again.
by .avallach on January 21st, 2009
Avallach: perhaps you should research the rockets the Palestinians are using and then, you would realize why it's all the more wrong what the Jews are doing. The whole rocket thing is a jocket. These are homemade rockets that land anywhere but on their target, they're little more than firecrackers, toys. Those so hipped about rockets have killed a total of 20 people in 8 years versus what the US backed Israeli power has done: more than 1,000 people in 2 weeks - mostly innocent children and women. How's that for an eye for an eye?

How about I fire a few of these things into your neighborhood and wait and see how long it takes for people to get mad at me?
