the dip stick is how you check you oil... I do not even know why that gauge exists. if the dipstick sayes full, then you probably have a problem wiht your oil pump... I think the light is based on oil pressure. and YES, that can kill your engine too.
Have you checked the dipstick? My guess would be that there is oil in the engine, but the oil pump isn't working and isn't circulating the oil. Truthfully, it doesn't make much sense, but I wouldn't take chances. If for any reason that oil isn't circulating, you wouldn't drive it far before your whole engine would be toast. Ford is known for electrical problems, but it is also know for oil pump problems.
STOP. you can seize the engine. Do not trust the oil gauge, check the dipstick. If it registers withing the hash marks, take it to have the instrument panel checked.
I had that happen to me just after they had flushed my oil system..the dipstick still showed full...so I assumed it must be a piece of dirt blocking the oil flow...that was years ago and never happened again.
u might have to bring it to a shop, they have a scanner thing that resets the oil light. At least i know that some cars so that
