Smoking is killing you anyway. Perhaps this will be a reason to quit? This is not mean, people who smoke can be great people, and because of that I do not want to see them die before me!

It doesn't really bother me, but then again I'm not a smoker. I'm a little happy, only because it's neg effects are well-known (unfortunately one of them can help lead you to your grave abit faster) and I have a otn of loved ones who smoke,. If they can go cold-turkey because they can't afford them it'll be good for them and those around them. Although I can understand your frustration.

I am all for it! The only problem is the tax is WAY too low.

Maybe my chainsmoking neighbors shall slow down and give me a friggin' break so I can breathe.

No, I am dreaming again. I know they shall cut down on their food to keep their precious smokes.

Regardless, this might give incentive to quit or not start.

Stop bitching and try to quit? It will only benefit you so what's the problem? Now if they raised the tax on nicorette that would be a different story. You choose the habit so deal with the consequences.

heart attacks strokes and other health complications makes all our health insurance go up. Immediate death is not the problem, its the lingering illnesses that occur first. First hand witness to my fathers throat cancer and mother lung cancer, not a pretty sight.

Though I don't smoke, I don't agree with it. Economically speaking, it is yet another potential disaster in the making. An increase will undoubtedly decrease the number of smokers..then the number of people employed in the tobacco industry, from factories to farms..Sin tax is not the way to go. It's been tried, and failed.

As much as I despise smoking, I do not support 'sin taxes' because they hurt everything else. If you used to get cigarettes and fruit, for example, and cigarettes keep going up, you'll eventually give up the fruit to continue to get your cigs. This hurts the farmers, soda companies, snack companies, magazine companies, everybody.
Also, where does it stop? There's been talk of taxing hamburgers under 'sin taxes.'

$7 to kill yourself huh?? Well at least they aren't taxing rope. Cos then people might stop hanging themselves and start smoking!!! At least when you hang yourself no one next to you has to breathe it in.

Yes it does annoy me. Not because of the cost that smokers have to pay but for two reasons first what percentage of that money does the farmer get and second if everyones answer is no you should just quit smoking, then who is going to buy the cig's, if people stop buying them then this tax increase would be a waste of time. Smokers and farmers have always had to take what the government dished out to them. Oh nasty smokers...we can tax them to death because they will still buy them. I say the smokers should go on strike and stop buying them and start rolling their own!!!

It doesn't annoy me, because I don't smoke. BUT, I'm pretty sure that taxes will be raised on just about everything in the next handful of years, so you might as well get used to it.
