Learn the art of cooking large amounts, freezing them and eating off them for weeks. I make lasagnes, soups, quiches, pastas, stews.

Learn to turn the thermostat way down. You will save loads of dough and burn extra calories if you are watching your weight.

Combine errands and use the car as little as possible. Or tag along on someone else's shopping trips.

Get rid of extra cable channels. Embrace basic or ditch it entirely and get netflix. Watch what you want when you want to.

Save your coins up in a jar and find a coinstar machine that will give you amazon or itunes gift certificates. Instant entertainment budget!

Burn all your CDs to your hard drive and sell them to a used CD dealer.

Stop using the clothes dryer and hang stuff out to dry.

Buy food in bulk. Split packages of large things that will go rotten with one other person.

All great answers here so far...except maybe living in your car. :) My 2 cents worth....

    1) Ditch the cable tv.
    2) Join or create a food co-op with friends.
    3) Always scope out the nickel ads, paper and craigslist before buying something new.
    4) Make things for people instead of buying gifts.
    5) Have a child-care swap with other parents, take the kids to their house and have a date night in. If you don't have kids, babysit on nights you have nothing else to do for cheap. Parents will love it and you'll have a few extra bucks.
    6) Buy on sales and clearance, even for groceries.
    7) If you have a new little one, breastfeed if at all possible. I still can't believe what people have to pay for formula.
    8) People are always giving away candles and things, go without lights and "most" electricity for a night...very romantic, just be sure to blow them out.

Would love to see more answers to this. :)

Some suggestions: no drugs, no alcohol, no smoking, no fast food, no car, no movie rentals, mooch of friends, buy bulk, make whatever you can including bread, use Skype or other really cheap phone services for calls, no landline, and marry a rich man.

    Wow.
Well, I make my own laundry detergent - here's the "recipe": http://www.thefrugalshopper.com/articles/detergent.shtml
It comes out to about 3 cents per load, and it's environmentally friendly.

I make all my other cleaning products, too - I use nothing but a microfiber cloth, some good-smelling essential oils (a little goes a long way), vinegar or lemon juice for doing the windows and mirrors, baking soda for scrubbing the toilet, sinks, showers, etc.

Eating a primarily vegetarian diet also helps, so long as you don't buy those expensive, processed meat analogues.

Cloth diapering my kids saves a hell of a lot of money.

No one has addressed what you did NOT ask.

I would wonder at the circumstances of life that bring this situation about, and try to help you find solutions.

I have done this professionaly, and generally find that it is more satisfying to increase the 'inflow' of income than modify or decrease the 'outgo' of expenses.

But all of the answers given are fantastic, and kudos to them all for creativity.

In counseling, sometimes it helps to narrow down to the situations that make for difficult choices, as you are in now, and try to develop plans and ways to come 'out of the hole' so to speak.

I would love to talk with you about your real life situation that forces you in these dilemma, and help formulate a way to completely turn this around.

    Junk Yard Dog

I got rid of my TV. I itemized exactly a weeks worth of clothing(1 work, 1 home, 1 out each day). I sleep with my dogs to save on heating. I lived in my car to save on rent. I packed a cooler instead of the fridge. Laundromat once a week is cheeper than buying a washer and dryer and the energy to use them. I had a hard time living off of $600 dollars a month, around here it would be impossible at $330, unless I shared housing. I take 2 showers a week, use only bar of soap. Try fishing for free food. Try indoor gardening for cheap veggies. A small game hunting license and a BB gun can yeild squirell and rabbit, good with BBQ sauce. Learn to eat rice with most every meal. Avoid doing dishes by owning only 1 of everything (fork, spoon, glass, plate, pot, knife). Haircuts, invest in some electric clippers, $20 can buy you 5 years of free haircuts (depending on clipper's warranty). It takes more work to live off of less money, but it is possible. Just narrow down your bare nessesities, and simplify. Good Luck.....
