Do you find the quality of the items at the "dollar stores" to be as good as the products offered under big brand names at major retailers? What are "dollar stores" called outside of the United States?

I have found on occasions that in 'dollar' stores, the quality of the product is just as good as the quality from big brands, but also most of it is seemingly useless tat (that's why I love them so much. Where else can you get a tiny windmill, tinsel, cat food and a ceramic squirrel for under a fiver?) Oh, and in Britain they are called pound shops usually

I have bought a lot at dollar store, and no, the quality is not always as good. It depends on what you are looking for. I buy containers, wrapping stuff for gifts and novelty items from them at christmas time - and it is fine for that. We have bought crockery, which also is fine, and small tools (which are no good).
I think its a case of pot luck :)

This is a good question. On most things, the quality IS similar, especially stuff like cleaning supplies, paper products, and some food products, (like canned goods and spices). I think these stores are great and vital to lots of us on fixed incomes. I have bought some things that broke rather easily, so you do have to watch what you buy, (just like everywhere else).

I think it depends what you are looking for from them. I get cleaning supplies there and they seem to work just fine to me.

I have found items of very high quality in these stores - and some of the same brands. I can't answer the last part because I don't know?

    Looney Stores?

    Pound Stores?

I LOVE DOLLAR TREE! (oo did I just say that out loud) But I'm sorry to disagree but most of their products break within the first month or so.

The dollar stores usually sell name brands of certain items. Cleaning supplies, toilet paper, diapers, candy and snacks, drinks, beauty supplies, etc. I usually go for the brand names over the generics. They're still considerably cheaper than they would be at a traditional supermarket or grocery.

In Victoria in Australia, they are called Two Dollar Shops (the exchange rate I think - LOL) or discount shops and we have alot of them. I find the quality variable.
